My mama would kill me if I got a motorcycle.
That’s never stopped me from admiring the machines from afar. While I’ve always been more of a Triumph and a Ducati man, I can understand the appeal of the Harley-Davidson. No small part of that is the sound of a hog. It fills fans with glee and pretty much annoys the hell out of everyone else.
When the storied motorcycle manufacturer chose to make its first electric motorcycle prototype they knew they faced a dilemma: electric vehicles don’t really make a sound. Think of all the times a Prius or a Tesla has snuck up on you when you were walking. That kind of ultra-stealth just doesn’t fit with the Harley-Davidson brand.
Which is what leads us to Project LiveWire, which the company is taking on tour this summer. Imagine a low-flying jet plane swooping in on its prey and you’re on the right track for how this beast sounds. From a design nerd standpoint it’s kind of thrilling that H-D puts that much thought and care into their creations.
Get back to me when these things are on sale and we’ll talk about whether I’m still thrilled by the sounds of Decepticons racing down Sunset Blvd.
One thing I won’t dispute: this thing is gorgeous, and environmentally conscious. Maybe I should talk to me mam.
