Tesla Patents Going Open Source

on Thursday, Jun. 12th

In a move intended to accelerate the adoption of electric cars Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk announced that the company will make their technology patents effectively open source:

Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal. Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.

In the blog post on the company website Musk refers to being granted a patent as buying “a lottery ticket to a lawsuit,” and laments that the major aug manufacturers have not jumped into the zero-emissions game.

Auto manufacturing isn’t for the squeamish, so don’t expect an army of Tesla clones to appear overnight. Perhaps, however, some of the giants will start tinkering in their labs.
