Def Jam Finally Believes In Frank Ocean

on Friday, May. 20th

Yes, it seems that after Def Jam Records slept on one of the most intelligent and unique pop/R&B albums in the past few years, according to, they are now planning to give the singer/song writer Frank Ocean’s free album Nostalgia, Ultra a commercial release on July 26th.
Ocean released the album via Tumblr back in March (right around the time his crew made the cover of Billboard Magazine) but over a year after Def Jam reportedly passed on the record.
Frank expressed his frustrations on twitter, saying:
“i. did. this. not ISLAND DEF JAM. that’s why you see no label logo on the artwork that I DID. guess its my fault for trusting my dumbass lawyer and signing my career over to a failing company. fuck Def Jam & any company that goes the length of signing a kid with dreams & talent w/ no intention of following through. fuck em. now back to my day. i want some oatmeal and toast. brunch swag.”
So, let me get this straight. The album is already getting critical acclaim and radio spins across the country, Frank Ocean is already working with high profile artist like Beyonce and Nas, Island Def Jam did absolutely nothing to help but because Frank Ocean is probably still under contract with Island Def Jam, they have first dibbs on releasing it and ultimately making a buck without doing their jobs?
What is the moral of the story here? Do it yourself.
Chances are the paid version of Nostalgia, Ultra will have different material, as songs contain samples from MGMT, Coldplay, and The Eagles. But it will include the Tricky Stewart-produced track “Novacane”, which will also be digitally released on May 31st.
