The short subject films that get nominated for Academy Awards often get overlooked by the general population. Which is a shame, since every year there is some stunning work that comes through these categories.
The Live Action and Animated nominees are both starting a tour of theaters today, along with a few other featured shorts that round out each program. The two categories play separately, and the documentary short subjects will start their road show next week. The shorts will also be available on Feb 19th on iTunes and VOD, but these films really deserve to be seen on a big screen. Yesterday I wrote about the Machinima Interactive Film Festival for this week’s edition of The Weekender. Today I talked with Jeremy Azevedo of Machinima, who is their Senior Director of Entertainment Programming and one of the masterminds of the festival.
Azevedo’s team deals with “hundreds of partners in any given month”, and it is from this vast sea of content that the videos in the festival were selected. One of the goals of the festival was to showcase not only material from Machinima’s big parters, but from those they “felt were the next generation.”

I never wanted to direct. Like many women I loved movies from a young age yet rarely saw films that spoke to my experiences. Which is fine, not every action film or romantic comedy speaks directly to our own personal experiences, but they often resonate because of some elements of truth that are shared by all stories.
