Canadian Artists (No, Not You, Drake) Will Now Receive US Royalties

Nishat Kurwa on Friday, Sep. 28th

Royalty collection agency SoundExchange, which collects payments for recording artists when their songs are played on US radio, will now be raking in fees on behalf of Canucks.

Five Canadian recording artist unions have signed on with SoundExchange for their members to receive payments when their creations are used in Canada.

The SoundExchange is a non-profit that has more than a dozen agreements with other music fee collection agencies around the world., and the agreement will also provide for Canadian artists to receive royalties when their music’s played in the US.

This will not, however, open the door to Pandora streaming freely to Canada — that requires a territorial license.

I first encountered Sifteo Cubes back at IndieCade last October, and spent some time playing around with the little blocks which I first mistook for iPod Nanos.
