Indie Artist Financial Breakdown For 2012

Brandon McFarland on Thursday, Aug. 2nd

An update on 2010′s popular Selling Out infographic brings some pleasant surprises for indie bands out there.

Selling Out is based on information shared by indie labels and bands in a Google Spreadsheet.

So, how much does a musician have to distribute in order to make minimum wage ($1160 a month) using classic formats like vinyl and CDs, to new ones like iTunes, Rhapsody and Spotify?

To my surprise, streaming music pays out for indie artists. Vinyl proves to be the breadwinner overall and — remember Chuck D’s law suit against Universal Music Group over ringtone and download payouts? Chuck D’s cut from ringtones , revealed in a public statement by Chuck’s lawyer, played a big part in the research for ringtone earnings for major label artists.

I first encountered Sifteo Cubes back at IndieCade last October, and spent some time playing around with the little blocks which I first mistook for iPod Nanos.
