Rising Comics Star Amy Reeder Goes The Kickstarter Route
Noah J Nelson on Friday, Jun. 29th
Amy Reeder is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, comic book artist right now. Her run on Madame Xanadu (Vertigo) with comics legend Matt Wagner (Grendel) featured some of the most beautiful art and great sequential storytelling. When she was announced as the alternate rotation artist on DC’s Batwoman relaunch I was incredibly happy.
Then “creative differences” were sighted and she was dropped from that book. One of those situations where I like everyone involved’s work so much I just don’t want to know what happened. All I wanted to know is where Reeder would be turning up next.
That place is Kickstarter, where Reeder and editor-turned-writer Brandon Montclare have set up a shingle for a one-shot comic called Halloween Eve.
Eve has an imagination that’s more than active—it can be downright dangerous! Working late at the costume super-store Halloween Land, she gets lost in her own thoughts until something goes bump in the night… The rubber masks and plastic novelties are coming to life, and Eve must face ghosts, goblins, and gorilla suits made real!
There are a bunch of pieces of sample art over at the Kickstarter page. Which is where I found this promo sketch, a print of which is being offered up as a reward:
It’s all part of the comics revolution that is happening on Kickstarter, where both up and comers and established creators are shedding the restrictions of the traditional marketplace and finding new ways to reach fans.
