Does the Real Kickstarter Backlash Start Here?

Noah J Nelson on Wednesday, Jun. 27th

Gamers: they love rules lawyering. So I need you to tell me: is this article today in The Verge’s Polygon section the beginning of a real Kickstarter backlash, or is it a case people just not groking what the crowdfunding platform really is?

There is definitely a growing sense that projects just aren’t being vetted closely enough… something that felt like it wasn’t a problem during the first couple of years of the platform. Yet who should be doing that vetting? part of the problem is that people are following the lead of big attention aggregators– net celebrities and the like– when choosing who to back. Few, if anyone, is doing the work to check on people’s bona-fides.
