George Dvorsky over at io9 has a fascinating* article about a therapy model that feels like something out of a comic book.

Self-help schemes come and go, but a new framework has attracted the attention of a number of Silicon Valley techies — especially computer scientists and programmers. Called Internal Family Systems (IFS), it’s an integrated approach to individual psychotherapy that breaks conscious thoughts into individual, manageable parts that can be reprogrammed. And given its systematic methodology, it’s no surprise that Fgeeks have quickly latched on. But is there anything to this notion, or is it just another self-help fad?

That comic book would be either Doom Patrol or The Invisibles, both by Grant Morrison– now a comics superstar who back in the 90′s was all about Multiple Personality and Attention Deficit Disorders being an evolutionary advantage. The character of Crazy Jane in Doom Patrol got her powers from MPD– each personality had a different super-power.

The methodology behind IFS sounds like it could be great for those who already have a penchant for self-examination… but for folks whose primary problem is lacking perspective… well, don’t go assigning parts to your subconscious just yet, okay?
