An Occupy Oakland protester said to be an Iraq War veteran named Scott Olsen apparently suffered critical injuries to his skull as violence erupted during a confrontation between Oakland police, and neighboring law enforcement agencies, at Oscar Grant Plaza last night.

Reports are slowly trickling in regarding what precisely happened to the man believed to be Olsen, but a new YouTube video uploaded by user “in4mant1″ depicts the scene before as police began firing rounds of tear gas to disperse protesters who had been congregating in front of barricades. The unknown videographer pans across the landscape, then moves his shot toward an injured man who is carried off by other protesters as they desperately shout for a medic.

The Huffington Post apparently reached Scott Olsen’s mother in Wisconsin who said, “”He has a head injury,” she said. “They are still trying to figure it out with him. I don’t want to tie up the phone line. He’s not in the best shape.”

The Guardian reports that they’ve confirmed with Highland Hospital, where Olsen is currently being treated, that he is in critical condition.
