VIDEO: Protesters Occupy NYC Dept of Ed Meeting

Charlie Foster on Wednesday, Oct. 26th

Protesters from the Occupy Wall Street movement last night took over a New York City Department of Education meeting presided over by the department’s schools chancellor. As soon as the panel called the meeting to order, someone in the crowd shouted “Mic check!” and the protesters took control with their low-tech technique of call-and-repeat speeches that has become known as the “People’s Microphone.”

The filmmakers at Meerkat Media, who earlier documented the Lower Manhattan demonstrations in gorgeous detail with their short video Consensus, must have pulled an all-nighter to edit Occupy the DOE. Shot with multiple high-def cameras and edited with subtitles and a pithy text introduction, the 5-minute video is another cinematic moment in a movement that continues to provide them.

I first encountered Sifteo Cubes back at IndieCade last October, and spent some time playing around with the little blocks which I first mistook for iPod Nanos.
