The Frustrated Egyptian Revolution

Days after dozens of Coptic Christians died in protests in Cairo, Egypt’s military rulers have responded to the incident publicly.

Less publicized is the plight of the protesters who’ve been detained after continuing their demonstrations in Cairo’s Tahrir Square. Nearly 12,000 civilians have been tried in military tribunals since the beginning of the year, and there’s fear among many young protesters about what’s happened to their comrades. One protester moved her campaign to Facebook after street crackdowns became too severe. This is her story.

Wow, this is a moving piece. I am surprised to learn that this movement, which is such an inspiration to us in the West, is still not over. My prayers and thoughts are with Shimaa. Many thanks for this great story.

OK. OK. I hate to admit it, but I get fascinated by details in the back of videos like this. For instance: she’s standing in front of a Hardee’s. Which I guess makes since. Because Hardee’s are all east of the Mississippi and Carl’s Jr. is west of the Mississippi IIRC.

And Egypt definitely qualifies as east of the Mississippi. That’s globalization for you, folks. NYC or Cairo? I guess we’ll be asking that question a lot in the coming weeks.

Dude, how did I miss that detail? Esp given it’s foreboding implications. Nice catch.
And given Shimaa’s message in this video…arguably NYC’s rebels are in better shape right now.
