Designing Solidarity For 9/11 Anniversary

Muslim Americans aren’t the only ones who have come under attack in America over the last decade. South Asian communities, and particularly Sikhs, whose religion requires that men wear turbans, have reported a dramatic increase in hate crimes, often based on assumptions that they are Muslim. Meanwhile, government policies like NSEERS special registration and FBI infiltration of mosques, have further alienated Muslim and South Asian Americans.

As the tenth anniversary of 9/11 approached, the members of Oakland, California design firm Design Action Collective wanted to draw attention to American xenophobia, and emphasize the work of community organizations that have sought to bring targeted communities into conversations around shared concerns. Here’s how they did it.
