Pacquiao Might Take a Few Punches…And Land a Knockout

Nishat Kurwa on Wednesday, Apr. 27th

Look for Manny Pacquiao to take some punches from Sugar Shane Mosley during their May 7th matchup — and not because he’s slippin’.

In a media call today, Pacquiao hinted that he would allow a couple of hits to land to keep the fight exciting, saying Mosley “moves fast. He has both speed and power also,  and that’s what I want. If he throws a lot of punches, it’s good for us,  to give a good fight.” But trainer Freddie Roach demurred, saying, “I don’t think it’s on purpose, but when you like to exchange, and you like to throw punches, you put yourself in harm’s way, and that’s why Manny’s the most exciting fighter in the world; I’m not going to take that away from him. He does like to throw combinations, and when you let your hands go, and leave yourself open, you don’t have that perfect defense. With that offensive mind inside you , you’re always going to have that other end.” Roach says they’re going into the fight planning to throw a lot of combinations.

Of course, odds are stacked high against the almost-40-year-old Mosley. But echoing Mosley’s trainer Naazim Richardson, Roach said Mosley shouldn’t be underestimated – and that he’d be excited if Pacquiao registers a knockout. “Shane’s a tough guy and very durable guy; it would be a feather in Manny’s cap to be the first one to stop him and just prove to the world how much better he is than that other guy who couldn’t stop him. We’re going to fight at a fast pace…we’re going to go for it this time, and if it comes, it comes, and I think Manny’s definitely the guy to do it.”
