Comparison Shopping For Ethical Products

Robyn Gee on Tuesday, Feb. 8th

Being a smart shopper means more than just finding the best price for some people. That’s why companies like The Good Guide and The Ethical Company Organisation have developed iPhone and iPad apps that allow you to comparison shop for the most ethical, animal-friendly, environmentally-sound, human-rights-oriented products on the shelves.

The Good Guide iPhone app:

This app allows you to scan the barcode of an item you are interested in purchasing and receive the Good Guide’s rating of the company.  The Good Guide’s rating system gives each brand a health, environment, and social score – which then get summarized into an overall score between 0 – 10.  The Good Guide has over 75,000 food, toys, personal care, & household products in their database and had previously established its niche in the conscientious shopper’s world as an online resource before it became a handy app.

The Good Shopping Guide Ethical Shopping app:

This app, released by The Ethical Company Organisation in London, compares the Corporate Social Responsibility records of the companies in their database. They use 15 ethical criteria that fit under the headings Animals, Environment, and People.  The shopper can search for a brand name individually, and then continue searching by category, like health and beauty, or home and office.

I first encountered Sifteo Cubes back at IndieCade last October, and spent some time playing around with the little blocks which I first mistook for iPod Nanos.
